Kinosuite Consulate Film Program and ROSKINO brought Russian Film Day to Jakarta on July 5, 2025, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation–promoting films from multinational backgrounds to coincide with the 75th year of Indonesia and Russia’s bilateral relations.

This event joins the long list of Kinosuite’s efforts in connecting local films to the world. Partnering with ROSKINO, a government organization representing international distribution of Russian audiovisual content, Indonesian viewers are treated to a theatrical viewing experience of contemporary Russian films for the first time.

“Film is a prime vehicle to directly showcase Russian culture and traditions visually, which is important in shining light on stories told through a Russian point of view—whether it’s the nation’s historical aspects or highlights of its modern society. It’s a way to share parts of Russian tradition in compact, 90-minute snippets to the people of Indonesia,” shared Veronika Novoseltseva, a representative of the Russian Embassy in Indonesia.

It’s immediately seen in the lineup of auteurist art house features that showcase an authentically Russian point of view, such as Nikolai Larionov’s emotionally compelling Endless Winter (2024) which follows the grief-filled aftermath of a dead teenager, or Alexander Voitinsky’s fantastical blockbuster take on a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, The Enchanted Tinderbox (2024).

Rounding out the program are the documentary on Olympian Roman Kostomarov: Born Twice (2024), Three of Us’s (2024) picturesque love story journeying the Perm countryside, and historical war drama His Name Was Not Listed, proving Russian Film Day to be a unique and diverse window into the vast expanse of the nation’s film industry.

Beyond highlighting Russian movies, Russian Film Day is also a vessel to further propel Indonesia’s filmmaking industry—as the Indonesian Film Festival in Russia will be held this July in accordance with the organizations’ bilateral initiatives—catapulting Indonesian local cinema in the global cinematic environment.

Kinosuite President and filmmaker Julio Rionaldo stressed, “Without regional festivals, new talents would never be discovered. It’s an important starting point for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talent and reach market saturation in an intangible industry that’s really tough to break into.”

This collaboration with ROSKINO has also opened doors for Parcstar’s debut indie feature, Bestiary, to have its Russian debut in Moscow under Nusantara Insight Film Festival (NIFF), a newly launched initiative aiming to amplify emerging Indonesian voices through cinema as well as foster national pride, cultural diplomacy, and global connection. Co-initiated by Rionaldo, NIFF will also premiere the docudrama 12 Mile: Guiding the Archipelago which will tour three European cities: Amsterdam, Vienna, and Athens. “We are not merely exporting films; we are extending hands, sharing truth, and opening dialogues to the miracle of possibilities,” Rionaldo emphasized.

There’s no denying that Indonesian films continue to mark its territory in the global cinema landscape, whether it’s hosting Asian filmmakers in a hallmark festival or exporting local stories to international silver screens. And with everything Parcstar has lined up, the resonance of Indonesia’s filmic stories will continue to amplify and invite people into appreciating the nation’s culture all the better.
